: My mother is a Tooker and I have been working on her family on and off for a
: number of years. I had a couple of things to add to the account by Warren
: Tooker on your home page. The earliest mention I can find of Capt. John
: Tooker is in the town records of Brookhaven "8 June 1662 John Tooker haue
: exchanged his lott and acomadations in gemeka that he bought of mr. Robert
: (Coe) with edward Rouse and his wife for his acomadations that is in
: Setakett that he had of John (Scuder) with there crops that is upon the
: grounds each acomadations thay doe give sell and allinate and exchang ech to
: other heire haires and asaigns to haue and to hould for ever." 'gemeka' I'm
: pretty sure is Jamaica Plains, not Jamaica the island, but I could be wrong.
: I haven't pursued looking for him in Jamaica Plains, but I note that it is
: several hours east on the Long Island expressway from Brookhaven/Setauket.
: So this might be a place to look for him in that time period from 1655 to
: 1662. There are numerous references to him in the Brookhaven town records,
: since he was the town clerk for a number of years; ran a tavern and a mill
: as I recall, etc.
: Second, should Fort Jefferson be Port Jefferson, a town on the north shore?
: A good deal of my mother's family is buried in the cemetery at Port
: Jefferson, but I haven't heard of a Fort Jefferson.
