On the other hand, I suppose the Mr. Tooker of Pepys' Diary could be a descendant
of the Maddington Tookers through John Tooker (1562-), whom Jeffrey concludes
was most like the ancestor of John Tooker Sr. of Southold, Long Island.

A relationship to the land-owning Maddington
Tookers could be responsible for any "connections" that the Southold
Tookers enjoyed, i.e. a relationship with Navy bigwigs (literally!)
such as the Carterets and Pepys (himself a cousin of the Earl of Sandwich).

This connection with a farm deep in the heart of
Wiltshire doesn't exactly give a rich sea-going
tradition to the Tookers, however Pepys in his
diary hints that under Charles II there were too many
"gentleman" getting command of Navy ships, and not
enough professional sailors!
